THE ART OF THE CHASE

by

AMANDA LOCKHART

We are delighted to welcome Amanda Lockhart, one of the UK’s foremost equine photographers, to Augustus Brandt.

This exhibition is the first to combine images from two of Amanda’s photographic books, The Art of the Chase – a elegiac portrayal of hunting in Britain leading up to the 2005 hunting ban – and The Art of the Race, a pictorial documentary behind the scenes of British racing.

The pictures, almost all shot on negative, have been reformatted to create large, limited-edition, giclée prints, available here for sale for the first time.

Amanda’s work captures the pure freedom of horse riding and hunting. Figures on horseback are carried through vast landscapes, up gallops in Lambourn, across great open fields and down the home straight back to the stables in Newmarket. Similarly, hounds are photographed on rolling hillsides, windswept and instinctively alert.

A wonderful energy is portrayed in these images, both through the powerful movement of these majestic animals, and the human focus being an impending race that requires the highest level of training, or a hunt, where the focus shifts to the chase. Photographed in these wild places, the prints are a timeless glimpse into the world of these rural pursuits.

Amanda’s body work includes commissions from a variety of horse-racing establishments, including The National Stud, Juddmonte Farms (Prince Khalid Abdullah of Saudi Arabia’s racing establishment), and Ascot Racecourse, where her pictures have for the last six years adorned the main concourse area as a permanent exhibition.

She has also exhibited her racing pictures in Newmarket: in the Jockey Club Rooms, in the National Horseracing Museum, and at the 1000 Guineas meeting. Her hunting pictures have also been exhibited at Space Gallery in London, at the Cavalry and Guards Club in Piccadilly.

The exhibition runs until 26th January 2019.
